Malcolm in the Middle follows the chaotic life of Malcolm, a gifted but misunderstood middle child in the dysfunctional Wilkerson family. Identified as a genius with an IQ of 165, Malcolm is placed in advanced classes for gifted students, which only makes him more of a target for bullies and further alienates him from his peers. Living in a working-class household with his overbearing, domineering mother Lois, his well-meaning but immature father Hal, his older troublemaking brother Francis, and his younger brother Dewey (later joined by baby Jamie), Malcolm navigates the absurdities of family life, school, and adolescence. The show is known for its innovative single-camera format (no laugh track), breaking the fourth wall, surreal dream sequences, and its honest, often hilarious portrayal of a struggling middle-class American family.
