Set during Macau’s “Silent Tide” period in World War II, Silent Tides tells the story of patriotic Chinese resisting Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. After Hong Kong falls in December 1941, Macau becomes a crucial port and international intelligence hub for strategic materials. Though the Portuguese administration claims neutrality, it allows Japan’s “Ze Agency” spy network to operate freely. He Xian, a modest banking entrepreneur, moves his family to Macau and finds himself entangled in underworld dealings and political chaos. He joins forces with patriotic youth Qiao Yinwan, underground Communist agents Ke Lin and Ke Zhengping, and businessman Ma Wanqi. Together, they wage fierce battles of wits and courage against Japanese collaborators in finance, intelligence, and material transport. Their efforts help Macau survive its most turbulent years while raising funds and supplies to support China’s war of resistance and the global anti-fascist effort.
