In postwar Paris, Jan Bojarski, a Polish refugee and brilliant engineer, lives a quiet life with his family. Secretly, he is the most skilled counterfeiter of his time, known in the underworld as the “Cézanne of forgery.” For fifteen years, he produces banknotes so perfect they fool the Bank of France. His genius draws the obsessive attention of Commissioner Mattei, the top police investigator in France. What begins as a legal pursuit turns into a personal duel between two stubborn men, each determined to outwit the other.
