Harold Finch, a reclusive billionaire computer programmer, has built a secret machine for the federal government that predicts violent crimes before they happen. However, the machine identifies both perpetrators and victims, and the government only cares about the former. Finch recruits John Reese, a presumed-dead former CIA operative, to help him stop the crimes the government ignores. Together, they operate outside the law, saving lives while evading detection from the authorities and a shadowy organization determined to control the Machine. The series explores themes of surveillance, artificial intelligence, privacy, and morality in a post-9/11 world.
