Derry Girls is a beloved British comedy-drama set in Derry, Northern Ireland, during the 1990s at the height of The Troubles. The series follows five teenage girls—Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle, and James (the only boy in the group, nicknamed “Clare’s cousin”)—as they navigate the chaos of adolescence against the backdrop of political conflict and social upheaval. Despite the violence and tension surrounding them, the girls are more concerned with typical teenage worries: boys, friendships, family drama, school troubles, and figuring out who they are. With its sharp wit, authentic Northern Irish dialogue, and heartfelt storytelling, Derry Girls brilliantly balances humor with poignant moments, capturing the universal experience of growing up while celebrating the unique culture and resilience of Derry’s community.
