Three interconnected families navigate the complexities of modern life in suburban Los Angeles. Jay Pritchett, a wealthy businessman, married Gloria, a fiery Colombian woman, and is raising her son Manny while adjusting to late-in-life parenthood with their son Joe. His daughter Claire is a type-A mom married to Phil, an eccentric real estate agent and self-proclaimed “cool dad,” as they raise three children: Haley, Alex, and Luke. Meanwhile, Jay’s son Mitchell, a neurotic lawyer, and his partner Cameron, a flamboyant music teacher, adopt Vietnamese daughter Lily and later welcome a second child through surrogacy. Through mockumentary-style interviews and hilarious family dynamics, the series explores love, parenting, marriage, and what it means to be a family in the 21st century.
