Steven Grant, a mild-mannered museum gift-shop employee, begins experiencing blackouts, disturbing visions, and memories that do not belong to him. He discovers that he shares his body with Marc Spector, a former mercenary and the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu.
As Steven and Marc struggle to understand their fractured identities, they become entangled in a supernatural conflict involving Arthur Harrow, a former servant of Khonshu who seeks to awaken the goddess Ammit and judge humanity before people commit their crimes. With the help of Layla El-Faouly, Steven and Marc travel through Egypt, confront ancient gods, and learn to cooperate as they face their traumatic past.
